Grades and Serious Academics

by: PNM 26

I’m going through recruitment in the fall and want to know which house puts grades/studying first. I don’t care about the party aspect but want to meet people who are serious about academics. I have good grades, decent looks and very involved in highschool but want a more academic sisterhood. Thank you

I think the best perspective is which houses to avoid because they are all about partying and couldn't give a sht about grades. Most are just here to get their Mrs. anyway rather than to reach their full potential. So I would stay away from Alpha Phi and GPhi definitely. Plus their sisterhoods aren't that good anyway. DG and SK probably aren't the houses for you, either, just because they have other things on their mind. Houses that emphasize grades and leadership, that also have beautiful women, include PiPhi, ChiO and ADPi. Theta and Kappa care about grades, too. Don't be fooled about social media and descriptions of each house before recruitment. I went through rush when APhi had been told to get their act together and get some pledges that would at least stay a few semesters before dropping out. You would think that house was full of AP Scholars. LOL. You will get a good idea when you visit the houses based on simple things like the ability to communicate without sounding stupid. Pay attention. "I should have went"? "For all intensive purposes?" Supposably? Give me a break. But you will hear those all the time at some houses because they don't know any better.

This is a great response. However, I think it's important to add the following:
Pi Phi, ADPi, ChiO and Theta are highly selective. You need a very high GPA and be very well-rounded to be able to make it to pref for these houses. They cut a ton of girls in the first round just based on GPA. I'm not trying to discourage you, but the point is that you will be competing against hundreds of girls who are the creme of the crop from other high schools. There is simply not enough room for everyone at the end. So, unfortunately, the reality is that a ton of highly qualified girls don't make the cut. In a perfect world, these houses would love to have them, but they are limited by the quota. That being said and based on your post, I would keep AChiO, Kappa, KD and maybe Zeta (all solid houses) in your back pocket if the other four don't work out for you. Remember, these are all just broad generalizations to take into account when going through rush. It's best to just maintain an open mind when going through the process. All of this is just my opinion. I'm sure there are people who will disagree with me.

I absolutely agree that AXO is worth considering. It's a niche house full of smart girls who also excel at other things. Best of all, they have a lot of confidence and a strong sense of self. Great sisterhood full of women who aren't running around obsessing about makeup, fake tans and impressing boys. I sort of think of AXO as a mini-PiPhi or ADPi.

Looking at community data on Mizzou's FSL page is a good way to get an idea of which houses prioritize grades and which don't. I would recommend trying to go for top 3 on the list (Pi Phi, Theta, ADPI) if you want an academic sisterhood
