Grades and Serious Academics

by: PNM 26

I’m going through recruitment in the fall and want to know which house puts grades/studying first. I don’t care about the party aspect but want to meet people who are serious about academics. I have good grades, decent looks and very involved in highschool but want a more academic sisterhood. Thank you

This is a great response. However, I think it's important to add the following:
Pi Phi, ADPi, ChiO and Theta are highly selective. You need a very high GPA and be very well-rounded to be able to make it to pref for these houses. They cut a ton of girls in the first round just based on GPA. I'm not trying to discourage you, but the point is that you will be competing against hundreds of girls who are the creme of the crop from other high schools. There is simply not enough room for everyone at the end. So, unfortunately, the reality is that a ton of highly qualified girls don't make the cut. In a perfect world, these houses would love to have them, but they are limited by the quota. That being said and based on your post, I would keep AChiO, Kappa, KD and maybe Zeta (all solid houses) in your back pocket if the other four don't work out for you. Remember, these are all just broad generalizations to take into account when going through rush. It's best to just maintain an open mind when going through the process. All of this is just my opinion. I'm sure there are people who will disagree with me.

I absolutely agree that AXO is worth considering. It's a niche house full of smart girls who also excel at other things. Best of all, they have a lot of confidence and a strong sense of self. Great sisterhood full of women who aren't running around obsessing about makeup, fake tans and impressing boys. I sort of think of AXO as a mini-PiPhi or ADPi.

Looking at community data on Mizzou's FSL page is a good way to get an idea of which houses prioritize grades and which don't. I would recommend trying to go for top 3 on the list (Pi Phi, Theta, ADPI) if you want an academic sisterhood

Telling you what sorority you should "go for" is not realistic because the sororities are doing the choosing. You are rushing all the sororities and it is their decision to invite you back or not, not so much your ranks of them.

You will not get a chance to meet the chapters before they make their first releases, so you need to indicate in your video that good grades and being around like-minded people are important to you. You also need to show that you can keep up your grades while meeting the requirements of sorority membership; it takes up a fair amount of time each week, especially as a new member.

For the in-person rounds, your success is up to how well you present yourself in person and your conversations. Remember not to treat your rush interactions like a series of interviews; what you say matters but the WAY you say it and how you personally connect with each sister you talk with determines getting to the next round. They are looking for girls they want to be friends with, not just ticking boxes of requirements. There has to be a mutual vibe. You will be able to tell which houses are your vibe and will rank them accordingly, and hopefully you will get back the houses that you rank high.

By round 3 if you have a favorite then tell them so, they can't read your mind.

Thank you so much for the input. Not knowing much about Greek life I just want to make sure I steer clear of party houses or houses that are more superficial. I know from the feedback that I’ll probably figure it out as I go.
