Truly most difficult sorority to get into

by: Bea

I’ve been told by several people that with my resume I should have a great recruitment experience. No one in my family has ever been in the Greek system so I have no idea what to expect. I know I’m told to go in with an open mind in an open heart, but just out of curiosity, which are probably the hardest sororities to get into.

1. What does it matter? Are you implying the most important criterion for you is not where you fit best, but that you “conquered” rush?

2. Your resume is subjective, and you’ll be rushing alongside hundreds of other girls with phenomenal resumes. The top sororities turn down many highly qualified girls every year. They simply don’t have enough bids to give one to everyone that makes it to pref.

3. You could be an all-star on paper but that doesn’t necessarily translate into success during each round of rush if you aren’t good at the social aspect, like impromptu conversation. If they don’t feel the vibe with you, or you get an unlucky draw with a member assigned to you, you may not get asked back. There is an element of luck to rush.

4. Scroll through the post history here and you should get an idea regarding the information you seek. Your question is answered many times over in one form or another.

Who's telling you that, old ladies who rushed forever ago, or well-meaning supporters who have never rushed? Resume and GPA only count for getting past the first round, and your social media also needs to be on point for summer consideration. After Open House those don't matter because the in-person rounds are about how you show up in your looks and style, your conversations with members, and the vibe you give, and only those things.

You can have the best "resume" in the world and it won't make a bit of difference if you aren't offering what a sorority needs. Lots of women go through rush with a 4.0 or more (weighted). Lots of women have a 34 ACT or higher. Many have state tennis titles or were the lead in the school play three years in a row or have won national piano competitions. But the top houses won't be interested in you, even if you offer all those things, unless you can have a stellar conversation and can communicate on a level that attracts people to you. A resume is a starting point, and is a low bar at best. What's more important is whether people want to be your sister. Try working on that.

I just wanted to know which were the hardest to get into so if they don’t ask me back I won’t be so disappointed. I feel like I’m a normal girl not a stellar girl and would like a house that’s not so competitive

Didn't you say your resume indicates you will have an outstanding rush experience? I'm so confused. If you stick with rush throughout its entirety, you will get into a house. It might not be PiPhi (the toughest house to get into) or ADPi or ChiO or other selective houses, but you will be part of the sorority experience. Don't worry about the top houses. Worry about finding your niche, making a connection and doing your best.

There are definitely sororities that cut more girls than others. However they don't all cut for the same reason. You could have one bad conversation at a house and that's the end of it, or you could have one random thing come up in conversation that makes a girl decide you're her rush crush. Resumes are important and are an easy way to make sweeping GPA cuts, but they're definitely not the only way to guarantee that you're going to have an amazing rush. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but honestly, every house at Mizzou has girls with amazing resumes. But what each house considers amazing varies a lot- some are more focused on grades, some on volunteerism and leadership, and some focus honestly on social skills and how a girl carries herself. Resumes help you to get your foot in the door of a house and give the girls talking points with you, but your conversations and behavior are going to matter so much more during recruitment!

Also remember you’re making decisions based on such a small snippet during rush. You will find women who become your close friends in whatever house you join. You get a great experience if you put into it. I’m not saying be a ‘I just want a house, ANY house’ girl. You make your choices and they make theirs. But be willing to change your preferences as the week goes on. Maybe a group you haven’t noticed yet sees something in you and thinks ‘she’s going to fit in well here’. Hopefully you filter to the homes that will best fit you. Trust the process.
