ACT/SAT Score Importance

by: ?

I know GPA is very important during recruitment, but how important are ACT/SAT scores?

if you've got a legit GPA (3.5 or better), then a 22 or better ACT should not hurt you... assuming you're a high school grad as opposed to home school grad

if your GPA is less than a 3.5, you really need a 24 or better ACT for your academics to not negatively impact you

and as always, exceptions are always a thing & you just never know. sometimes a girl with a 3.0 and a 22 ACT will do just fine & other times a girl with a 4.0 and a 32 will get released heavily at the first round. there are always case by case decisions - so no one answer will fit everyone's situation

What if a PNM goes test optional?

MSU verifies academic information directly to each sorority. So whatever information the school has, the sororities will have. Did you get admitted to State without an ACT/SAT as "test optional?"

Yes I’ve was admitted as test optional. I have a 4.0 gpa (unweighted).

Then it'll depend on what high school you attended. If it was a public one in the state of MS, you should be okay. If it was homeschool or out of state, it might be an issue for some groups. You just do you - and keep your mind open to all possibilities. I believe there is a spot in greek life at State for every girl who want to be part of a sorority...but it just may not the be group you "want" initially.

No one looks at that. Not at all. Just GPA. & all sororities care that you have a 3.0+ for membership but only a FEW care & will drop you fast if it isn’t around that 3.8-4.0 threshold. Maybe if you have 3.5+ with HEAVY connections, you could still have those but it would take a lot of pull. Cough cough the ones with heavy jackson members.

Girl idk about that. Bring in someone with a 16 ACT and there's gonna be questions... no matter what her GPA is.

No like I’m telling you. Unless there was 1 spot left with 2 pnms and the only thing one had on the other was a higher act score, that’s the only time it would truly matter. Obviously a low gpa paired with low act would raise concerns but other wise no.

Hey girl - idk if you've ever been in on the real back room decision making... but it does matter. Maybe not to every group at State... but there will be groups who it will matter to. The ones who expect academic excellence out of their members will care & it will matter.
Will that be every group? No, of course not.
But there will def be at least half of them (if not more) who will see "test optional" (no ACT/SAT) and have questions that they may not stop to get answers on. It's an easy release point for many groups if you're honest about it.

It only matters for getting past the first round. If you have a decent enough GPA for a particular house's requirements then they will look at your socials and if you have any connections. There is nothing you can do about it at this point so don't sweat it and see who you get back for second round and put your whole focus on those houses.
