Dropping old row
by: Bama boundI’m going to be rushing this fall and I’m from the north. Do I have a better chance of getting a bid from a sorority if I don’t rank the old row houses on my preference list?

No one knows how you rank and if you aren’t on their list you would fall to your lower ranked houses that didn’t drop you so it really won’t matter. I guess if everyone kept you round 1 and then a bunch dropped you round 2 it could matter for your lowest ranked houses but that’s not a likely scenario.

With RFM in play, chapters with the highest return rates (based on previous years) have to make the biggest cuts. So yes, if you rank very popular houses lower, you have a better chance of matching with other chapters who can invite back more PNM's. In the end, if you maximize your options and keep an open mind, you will get a bid from a sorority that you will be happy with. Good luck!

If you go in with no expectations and are open to any house you will be fine. If you ranking OR low hoping it will get you in a higher ranked NR house you may potentially be disappointed.

Rank the houses according to your preference, based on how you feel after visiting. Coming into this process with a strategy mindset will set you up for disappointment. Feel secure enough in yourself that you will end up with a bid from a house you will love and will love you back. It’s really that simple.

It doesn’t work like that, especially in those early rounds. I’d love to know how this worked out.
The only way I could see it helping is before Philanthropy if you had lower grades and ranked the highest GPA chapters lowest to “drop” them. They would most likely drop you 1st day anyway, so you’d have a little peace of mind knowing that more of your #1s are still on your invite list.

This is NOT true in the least, NOT how RFM works! A PNM can't game the system like that. A PNM doesn't get "a better chance at matching with other chapters" by ranking others low. Ranking one chapter low doesn't get her invited back to another she ranked high, they have NOTHING to do with each other. First, PNM's only rank chapters, they do NOT drop them. Regardless of how low a PNM ranks a chapter, that house can still show up on the PNM's schedule because the algorithm will give a PNM as many chapters back as possible for every round, making up for the ones that release her by filling in with her lower ranked ones that wanted her back. Second, the sororities are deciding who to release, and a PNM's ranks of them have NO influence in that, the sororities don't see the PNM's ranks. When a PNM is below their cutoff number they are released, doesn't matter how the PNM ranked them. Third, the only time a PNM's lower ranked chapters actually do drop off her schedule is if more chapters want to invite her back than the schedule will allow for that round. BUT this is highly uncommon and the vast majority of PNM's will get back some or all of their low ranked chapters and still not even have a full schedule for Philanthropy or Sisterhood. Fourth, people throw out the term "maximize your options" with no idea what it means. It means to not drop out of the process and not SIP after pref. There is nothing a PNM can influence with her rankings unless every single sorority wants to have her back at every single round, which is not happening. Lastly, the ONLY way for a PNM to rank chapters is by what her gut tells her. Rush is NOT the time to try to be analytical, it makes for a terrible rush if the focus is not solely on feelings, instincts, and connecting with members.
