sll paid to remove post about ifc breaking from iu

by: IFC Exec Alum

I just checked back and my post suggesting that one of the ways to fix the Greek system might be to break ties with IU has been removed.......I guess you aren't allowed to think dangerous thoughts! I am assuming SLL is behind it because who else would care. The fact is that the relationship with IU no longer serves its primary purpose and the relationship has become very one sided and occasionally abusive. Unless IU is willing to work with our chapters, the relationship is not worth maintaining. I must have hit a nerve....I will provide more answers next week.

We are on spring break and I mentioned this post in regard to what's been going on at IU with regard to Greek Life. My Mom and her friends were surprised that Greeks no longer were in power in all of the organizations on campus. When they were students at IU, all of them in sororities, the IUSG president was in a frat, the heads of IUSF, SAB, and just about every other campus organization were Greek. IU Greeks need to start getting themselves back into those positions. It's hard to bust a fraternity when someone on the inside knows what's going on. Think about it.

there shouldn't be anymore posts about so and so houses being bad or good.

This is the time where everyone helps each other succeed so everyone can have fun at school, not a select few.

Sure, reposing....Due to research I have done for my chapter, I am probably one of the most knowledge alumni on IU's Greek system. This isn't my fight anymore but it is yours and so my knowledge is only useful when shared. I wrote a piece last year after Sigma Nu's suspension on rules for chapters to survive....simple stuff like no hard liquor for pledges, keep your grades above the AMA and the like. The problem isn't just with chapter culture, it is that the relationship with IU is broken. Once IU had one of the strongest fraternity systems in the country, along with Illinois, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas, Florida, Cornell and Penn State but not anymore. Its been 20 years of an adversarial relationship and the result is that 19 of the houses men's chapters have been suspended with little to no IFC input in the disciplinary process. The cost of these suspensions between lost houses (5 I think) and lost rent now exceeds $35mm.

The irony is that this is not good for the chapters or at the end of the day for IU. The partnership, when it was a partnership, benefited both. If you want to see what such a partnership should be, look at Alabama.

There are three paths for the IFC to follow.

One is to continue making concessions. A few years ago, it was the Housed Greek Organization Agreement. Last year, it was the temporary suspension. The next "ask" will be deferred rush even though the only multicampus study on the matter shows that it doesn't work. This path will lead to the eventual death of the IU's fraternities.

The second path is to restore the partnership and self governance. This is what I hope will happen but it requires coordination. IFC must instruct that no fraternity man should vote for any IUSG Presidential candidate that does not have restoration of the IFC run judicial board as his number 1 priority. This is a right that IFC used to have and that every strong fraternity system in the country has. I can get into why this works better later in the larger posting. This partnership also means chapters focus on supporting the university in any way they can.

The third path is to sever ties with IU as fraternities at Colorado have done. While it is believed that IU owns the ground under the chapters on Jordan, this is not true. The chapters could break ties but there are potential legal complications. In order to explore this issue, IFC should hire Manley Burke, the law firm most knowledgeable on fraternity issues in the country. This will cost money but IFC has a hidden source of potential untapped money. In 1965, according to the IU trustees minutes, IFC invested $1,500 with the IU foundation. Today, this would be worth about $65k if it grew at 7% and was left untouched. This should be enough to get useful council. I am hoping it does not come to this but it might.

I am flying to Europe this week and will write my analysis en route.

I just figured out why SLL deleted the last post....Bloomington just lost in court on its zoning regarding Greek housing....previously, in for a house to be used as a fraternity house, the organization within it had to be recognized by the uni. This was literally the only remaining benefit for continued association with IU. I wasn't going to bring it up and was going to let future legal council inform you on how to work around this rule but it looks like it was just struck down by the courts. google Manley Burke's fraternal law newsletter from this month that gives more details.....long and short, the biggest reason for remaining associated with IU has just been removed.....

I will provide more details in a week or so.

That's big. GLO's should strike while the iron is hot. Between that ruling and boycotts of Little 5 and Dance Marathon, and the resultant publicity, the University should be willing to make a deal.

IU, when you read this, remember the Alums are watching. Time to work with GLOs, not against them.

Greek life needs to disassociate from IU asap. IU is on a bounty hunt for frats and sororities and it sounds like the only option if we want to survive 5 years from now.
