Sure, reposing....Due to research I have done for my chapter, I am probably one of the most knowledge alumni on IU's Greek system. This isn't my fight anymore but it is yours and so my knowledge is only useful when shared. I wrote a piece last year after Sigma Nu's suspension on rules for chapters to survive....simple stuff like no hard liquor for pledges, keep your grades above the AMA and the like. The problem isn't just with chapter culture, it is that the relationship with IU is broken. Once IU had one of the strongest fraternity systems in the country, along with Illinois, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas, Florida, Cornell and Penn State but not anymore. Its been 20 years of an adversarial relationship and the result is that 19 of the houses men's chapters have been suspended with little to no IFC input in the disciplinary process. The cost of these suspensions between lost houses (5 I think) and lost rent now exceeds $35mm. The irony is that this is not good for the chapters or at the end of the day for IU. The partnership, when it was a partnership, benefited both. If you want to see what such a partnership should be, look at Alabama. There are three paths for the IFC to follow. One is to continue making concessions. A few years ago, it was the Housed Greek Organization Agreement. Last year, it was the temporary suspension. The next "ask" will be deferred rush even though the only multicampus study on the matter shows that it doesn't work. This path will lead to the eventual death of the IU's fraternities. The second path is to restore the partnership and self governance. This is what I hope will happen but it requires coordination. IFC must instruct that no fraternity man should vote for any IUSG Presidential candidate that does not have restoration of the IFC run judicial board as his number 1 priority. This is a right that IFC used to have and that every strong fraternity system in the country has. I can get into why this works better later in the larger posting. This partnership also means chapters focus on supporting the university in any way they can. The third path is to sever ties with IU as fraternities at Colorado have done. While it is believed that IU owns the ground under the chapters on Jordan, this is not true. The chapters could break ties but there are potential legal complications. In order to explore this issue, IFC should hire Manley Burke, the law firm most knowledgeable on fraternity issues in the country. This will cost money but IFC has a hidden source of potential untapped money. In 1965, according to the IU trustees minutes, IFC invested $1,500 with the IU foundation. Today, this would be worth about $65k if it grew at 7% and was left untouched. This should be enough to get useful council. I am hoping it does not come to this but it might. I am flying to Europe this week and will write my analysis en route.
