You have made one of the biggest decisions of your life to go to college. Congratulations! However, that’s not the only decision that you’ll have to make when it comes to college life. Another important decision that you’ll probably make is the decision to go Greek in college.
Greek life has lots of benefits to offer to its members – opportunities to build a network, social/community activities to participate in, a strong brotherhood bond to maintain, and many more! However, one of the biggest challenges college guys face at the beginning of their Greek life is choosing the right fraternity for themselves....

Something has shifted in how fraternities present themselves on campus, and I don't mean the Instagram aesthetic. Over the past few years - especially post-2020 - there's been a visible push from chapters across the country to reframe what brotherhood actually means. Philanthropy is louder. Mental health language shows up in recruitment pitches. DEI commitments get framed front and center. And honestly? Some of it is real. Some of it is a rebrand with nothing behind it. Knowing the difference matters more than most people admit.

When the university police show up with search warrants - plural - at two fraternities on the same day, something has gone seriously wrong. West Virginia University is dealing with exactly that right now. According to The Daily Athenaeum, UPD served search warrants at two WVU fraternities following hazing allegations. Not a courtesy visit. Not a "hey, can we talk" email from Greek Affairs. Actual search warrants. That is a level of escalation that most chapters never see, and it should make every active member in the country stop scrolling for a second.

There's a specific kind of nervous energy that shows up in a chapter house about two weeks before formal. You can feel it. Sisters are comparing venue options, arguing about bus logistics, texting dates they've been low-key planning to ask for months. The group chat is a disaster. And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos is something genuinely worth paying attention to - because formal season, done right, is one of the few traditions in Greek life that actually holds weight beyond the night itself.

Michigan State's Fraternity and Sorority Life put together a Safe Halloween program this year, and I want to talk about what that actually means from an organizational standpoint - because most people either roll their eyes at initiatives like this or treat them like a PR stunt. Neither reaction is right.

Living in a chapter house sounds like a dream until you're sharing 200 square feet with someone who has a completely different sleep schedule, hygiene standard, and threshold for background noise. I moved into our fraternity house the spring of my junior year, after spending almost two semesters as an independent, and nothing really prepared me for how complicated the roommate dynamic gets when you're also brothers.

There's a specific kind of uncomfortable that comes from reading a headline that says what everyone already knows but nobody in a Greek organization wants to say out loud. PantherNOW ran a piece recently called "The Sick Reality of Modern Greek Life" and it did what a lot of campus journalism does - it pointed at the wound without quite diagnosing the infection. And I've been thinking about it since, because I spent four years inside that system, and I think there's a more honest version of this conversation that needs to happen.

Every fall, some version of the same press release goes out from Greek councils across the country: "Fraternity and sorority members maintain a higher GPA than the general student body." And every fall, someone in the comments calls it propaganda. I was that guy sophomore year, before I joined. Then I joined, graduated with a 3.4, and watched my pledge class finish stronger academically than basically anyone expected - including us. So I've been on both sides of this argument, and I have some thoughts.

There's a piece running in The State Press right now asking whether sorority recruitment has turned into a search for fame rather than a search for sisterhood. And honestly, I've been thinking about that question all week - not from the Panhellenic side, but from where I sit as someone who went through IFC recruitment and watched dozens of women go through theirs at the same time. The question itself tells you something about where Greek life is right now.

Rush week has a reputation for being chaotic, and yeah, some of that chaos is unavoidable. But there's a specific kind of chaos that isn't random - it's a signal. And most PNMs walking through those doors have no idea what they're actually watching. I spent two years on Panhellenic council processing recruitment violations, mediating chapter complaints, and sitting in rooms where decisions got made that directly affected which women got bids. So I'm gonna tell you what the glossy rush guides leave out.
