Academy of Art University - AAU Overview

  About Greek Life at AAU

Academy of Art University is a private art and design school based in San Francisco, and its Greek presence reflects the school's overall culture — creative, niche, and a bit different from what you'd find at a traditional four-year university. The community here is on the smaller, more intimate side, with one active fraternity and one active sorority currently operating on campus.

The fraternity present is Kappa Sigma, a nationally recognized IFC-affiliated organization. On the sorority side, there's Sigma Delta AAU, which has a more localized presence tied specifically to the school. Because the Greek community is small, it doesn't follow the same council structure you'd see at a Big Ten or SEC school — there's no formal IFC or Panhellenic council running coordinated recruitment weeks the way larger universities do.

AAU doesn't have a traditional residential campus in the way most colleges do. The school operates across multiple buildings spread throughout San Francisco, and students are dispersed across the city rather than clustered around a central quad or Greek row. Because of that setup, chapters here don't have dedicated houses the way you'd expect at most schools. Social events tend to happen off-campus or in rented spaces around the city.

The broader campus culture at AAU is heavily focused on studio work, portfolio development, and creative industries. Social life revolves more around gallery openings, studio critiques, and the city itself than around Greek-affiliated events. That doesn't mean Greek organizations are absent — they still offer a social and community-oriented option for students who want one — but they're more of a specific interest for certain students rather than a central feature of campus identity.

Recruitment here is low-key compared to what you'd see at a large public university. If you're interested in joining, reaching out directly to the organizations is usually the way it works, rather than going through a formal rush week with bid day ceremonies and the full production that comes with bigger systems.
