Whitman College - WC Overview

  About Greek Life at WC

Whitman College is a small liberal arts school in Walla Walla, Washington, and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus scale. With just a handful of fraternities and sororities, this isn't the sprawling Greek Row you'd find at a large state school. What's here is IFC and Panhellenic — no NPHC or MGC chapters are established on campus. The fraternities operating under IFC include Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, and Tau Kappa Epsilon. On the Panhellenic side, you've got Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Whitman enrolls somewhere around 1,500 undergrads total, so even a smaller Greek system ends up touching a pretty noticeable chunk of campus life. Greek organizations here aren't invisible — they're part of the social fabric — but Whitman has a strong identity beyond Greek life too. It's an academically serious place with a tight-knit campus culture, and students tend to have a lot of identities and communities layered on top of each other. Greek membership is one of several ways people plug in socially.

Rush and recruitment at a school this size tend to feel more personal than at a big university. You're not walking through a massive system with dozens of chapters — it's a smaller pool, and you get to know people pretty quickly. Panhellenic recruitment typically follows a structured process in the fall, while IFC recruitment can be a bit more informal depending on the semester.

Most of the fraternities at Whitman have chapter houses, which gives them a physical presence on campus and makes them natural gathering spots for social events. Philanthropy is part of the culture across both IFC and Panhellenic chapters, as it is at most schools, and chapters participate in community service and fundraising efforts throughout the year.

Walla Walla is a relatively small town, so campus social life carries more weight than it might at a school in a major city. Greek events and house parties do factor into the weekend scene, though Whitman's overall culture leans collaborative and community-oriented rather than heavily party-focused.
