University of Massachusetts Amherst - UMA Overview

  About Greek Life at UMA

UMass Amherst is one of the largest public universities in New England, with a student body that tops 30,000 undergrads, and the Greek system here reflects that scale. There are multiple governing councils operating on campus — the Interfraternity Council (IFC) covers most of the historically men's fraternities, the Panhellenic Council oversees the women's sororities, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) presence, with chapters rooted in Latino, Asian American, and other culturally-based traditions. That breadth makes UMass one of the more structurally complete Greek systems in the region.

The organizations here run the full spectrum — from well-known IFC names like Sigma Phi Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Theta Chi, to Panhellenic chapters like Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Alpha Chi Omega, to NPHC pillars like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Delta Sigma Theta. MGC groups like Phi Iota Alpha, Kappa Phi Lambda, and Lambda Phi Epsilon round things out. It's a genuinely wide range of organizations.

UMass has a well-earned reputation as a party school, and Greek life plays into the broader social scene here, though it's not the only game in town. Campus is big enough that you'll have a full social life regardless of whether you go Greek. That said, IFC and Panhellenic chapters are active and visible, especially during fall semester. Formal recruitment for Panhellenic sororities follows a structured process, while IFC rush tends to be a bit more informal. NPHC and MGC chapters typically intake on their own schedules, often in the spring.

Housing situations vary by chapter. Some fraternities have houses either on or near campus, but not every chapter has a dedicated house — it's not a traditional "Greek Row" setup the way you'd see at some Southern state schools. Chapters make up for that through programming, social events, and philanthropy efforts tied to their national organizations.

Philanthropy and community service are part of the chapter culture here, as they are at most schools with established Greek systems. The level of engagement on GreekRank — with thousands of ratings and discussion posts — shows there's a genuinely active community of current members and alumni keeping tabs on how things are going across the system.
