Before I joined a fraternity, I spent my freshman year watching Greek life from the outside. And what I saw was mostly a feed of professionally lit group photos, matching outfits, philanthropic highlight reels, and captions about brotherhood and sisterhood that read like they were drafted by a PR team. The University of Houston just wrapped Greek Week, and the coverage coming out of it is exactly the kind of thing that makes Panhellenic people like me feel two things at once - proud and a little skeptical. Proud because Greek Week, when it actually functions, is one of the best arguments for the whole system. Formal recruitment hasn't changed in any meaningful way in over a decade. The format, the forced conversations, the scripted rounds, the way chapters get ranked and cut before anyone's had a real chance to connect - it's all running on the same logic it ran on in 2005.
