Mercer University - MU Overview

  About Greek Life at MU

Mercer University is a mid-size Baptist-affiliated school in Macon, Georgia, and the Greek system there is a real part of campus identity without completely dominating it. It's not a massive SEC flagship where half the school goes Greek, but it's not an afterthought either. The community sits at a size where you'll definitely know people in fraternities and sororities, and their events and philanthropy work are visible throughout the year.

The councils represented at Mercer include IFC, which oversees the traditionally white fraternities, and Panhellenic, which covers the sororities on that same side of the system. NPHC is also active on campus, representing the historically Black fraternities and sororities — Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Omega Psi Phi all have a presence here. There's also Delta Epsilon Psi, a South Asian-interest fraternity, which reflects some breadth in the overall community.

On the IFC and Panhellenic side, you've got well-known nationals like Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Nu, and Kappa Alpha Order for fraternities, and Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Chi Omega, and Phi Mu for sororities. Formal recruitment happens in the fall, and at a school Mercer's size, the process tends to feel more personal than what you'd find at a big state school.

Mercer doesn't have a traditional Greek Row in the way that large public universities do. Some chapters have houses or lodge spaces, but the physical footprint is more modest. That said, Greek organizations still drive a lot of the social programming on campus — philanthropy events, formals, and intramural sports are areas where chapters stay active and visible throughout the academic year.

Because Mercer has a strong pre-professional culture — it's home to well-regarded law, pharmacy, and engineering programs — a lot of students balance Greek membership with serious academic and career commitments. The Greek system here tends to reflect that balance rather than being the singular center of social life on campus.
