University of New Orleans - UNO Overview

  About Greek Life at UNO

Situated on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans East, UNO is a commuter-heavy urban university, and that context shapes its Greek system in pretty significant ways. This isn't a traditional residential campus where Greek life dominates the social calendar — it's a more compact, close-knit community where chapters tend to be smaller and more tightly connected to their members.

The system spans both IFC and Panhellenic councils, covering the more traditional fraternity and sorority experience, alongside a strong NPHC presence representing historically Black fraternities and sororities. The NPHC organizations — including chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta — are genuinely well-established on campus and tend to be visible and active in the broader university community. Divine Nine culture runs deep here, which makes sense given the demographics and history of New Orleans itself.

On the IFC and Panhellenic side, chapters like Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Theta Xi, Phi Kappa Sigma, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha make up the rest of the active organizations. Recruitment for these chapters tends to be more informal and lower-pressure than what you'd see at a large SEC school with massive Greek rows and thousands of rushees. There's no Greek row to speak of, and most chapters don't have dedicated chapter houses — meetings and events happen through campus spaces and off-campus venues around the city.

New Orleans itself is honestly a big part of the backdrop here. The city's event culture, Mardi Gras season, and general social energy mean Greek organizations often plug into things happening around them rather than generating all the social activity themselves. Philanthropy and community service tend to be genuine focal points for chapters across all councils, which tracks with UNO's broader identity as a school deeply tied to its city and region.

Overall, this is a smaller Greek community by most measures, but the chapters that are here tend to have members who are genuinely committed rather than going through the motions of a larger system.
