Duquesne University - DU Overview

  About Greek Life at DU

Perched on Bluff Street in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood, Duquesne is a mid-size Catholic university with a Greek system that plays a real role in campus social life without completely dominating it. It's a tighter-knit community than you'd find at a big state school, but there's genuine activity here across multiple councils.

The system includes both IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities, along with NPHC representation through chapters like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, and Phi Beta Sigma. That mix gives the community more range than a lot of schools this size. You've got well-known nationals like Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Tau Omega, Sigma Nu, Alpha Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Gamma Phi Beta alongside some smaller but active chapters across the board.

Rush and recruitment at Duquesne follow a pretty standard structure. IFC informal recruitment tends to be more relaxed, while Panhellenic formal recruitment is more organized and runs in the fall. Because the school itself isn't enormous, chapter sizes are smaller and you'll actually get to know people during the process rather than going through a massive cattle-call situation.

One thing to know about Duquesne specifically: most chapters don't have dedicated Greek houses the way you'd see at larger universities. Social events happen on and off campus, and a lot of chapter life runs through university-affiliated spaces. Pittsburgh itself becomes part of the mix too — being in a real city means there's always somewhere to go beyond just campus.

Philanthropy is a consistent part of the culture here, which fits with Duquesne's Spiritan Catholic mission and its general emphasis on service. Chapters regularly run fundraising events and community service initiatives throughout the year. Greek organizations also tend to be involved in student government and campus programming, so membership isn't just about the social side.

Overall, this is a smaller Greek community where chapters are pretty visible on a campus this size, and involvement tends to run deeper because the pool is more concentrated.
