West Virginia University - WVU Overview

  About Greek Life at WVU

WVU is a Big 12 school with over 24,000 undergrads packed into the hills of Morgantown, and the Greek system is a pretty visible part of campus life there. Between the fraternities and sororities, you've got a solid number of chapters operating across multiple councils, which gives the system some real range in terms of what's available.

The main governing bodies are IFC for the fraternities and Panhellenic for the sororities. You've also got NPHC representation on campus, with organizations like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Iota Phi Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta all present. That mix of councils means the overall community covers a lot of ground culturally and socially.

Morgantown's social scene leans heavily on Greek life, especially in the fall. Football weekends at Milan Puskar Stadium are a huge deal, and a lot of the pre-game and post-game culture runs through the fraternities and sororities. Fraternity Row is a real thing here — many of the IFC chapters have houses, and they're a central part of the weekend scene. Panhellenic chapters tend to have chapter facilities as well, though the housing situation varies by organization.

Fall formal recruitment is the main entry point for IFC and Panhellenic chapters. It's structured, follows university guidelines, and draws a decent amount of participation each year. NPHC chapters operate on a different intake model, typically running interest processes at their own pace rather than during a set recruitment week.

Philanthropy is a consistent thread across most chapters here. Many organizations run their own fundraising events tied to national causes, and community service hours are generally expected as part of membership. The Greek community at WVU has a long enough history on campus that a lot of these traditions feel well-established rather than forced.

Overall, Greek life sits somewhere between a dominant social force and a mainstream extracurricular — it's not the only way to have a social life at WVU, but it's hard to miss and pretty deeply woven into how the school feels, especially in the first two years.
