Let's unpack: Claim of having the 'hottest' or ...

by: Info

How does claiming the 'hottest' or 'prettiest' members mean that a sorority is the best or most relevant? This is not intended as discussion of specific sororities ... only the reasoning behind the perception in 2022. Let's unpack.

Tbh at bama the ranks aren’t dependent on looks like that. Other schools make their ranks entirely dependent on that but here ppl actually care about houses being the full package

Being hot or pretty is not an accomplishment. Claiming to be “the best” based on looks makes no more sense than claiming hot girls make the best friends.

But if that’s what a girl wants from her sorority experience and feels is “best,” there are several houses she may be interested in that are more focused on that aspect.

The best houses rush PNMs who have accomplishments, leadership, involvement, and high grades, as well as being put-together and attractive. Newsflash … it’s even possible to be pretty AND smart AND involved. The top houses are able to pick among these PNMs, which is why they remain strong, stable, and successful on campus year after year. There are plenty of smart, involved, pretty PNMs, and plenty of houses wanting to pledge them, including houses who participate in COB.

If a PNM is looking for an atmosphere of success and earned accomplishments, sisterhood, and growth through college and preparation for beyond, the “best” house for her would be one that aligns with those values. There are so many houses that would be her “best.”

No one ever talks about the girls that pad their resume for recruitment or construct their IGs with perfect pictures to create whatever image they want to present. They are no better than the attractive girls. Is all a game and you just hope you fall where you want to fall. I mean is it really fair if your family belongs to country club X, so that qualifies you for 3 sororities, but not the girl standing next to you. That is not values based. Just stop with trying to say many of the houses are not playing a game in choosing members. One may weigh looks more, but others are weighing so many other superficial things.

I want to let Rachel know many girls get let go through the cracks too. One pnm had a 5.7 gpa, national merit, solid resume, and attractive to Bama standards. She was dropped by every house but one after round 1. Then released soon after. Funny thing she never had the chance to talk to groups, so communication skills can't be the reason. She was OOS and maybe that was it. Still, VBR should have kept her in for all groups through round 1. There are more pnms below that gpa and without national merit status that should have been let go first. Is all a crap shoot. Should this pnm be crying because she was not chosen for an all- around house or attractive house? She just has to move on and ask herself how did they judge me without even meeting me.

As someone who’s HS school district graded on a 4.0 scale with ONLY 4.5’s available for A+s in AP classes (which lets be honest, you won’t start taking AP’s until sophomore year at the ABSOLUTE earliest, and even then it would be like 2 max), the highest you could graduate with in reality, if you literally got straight A’s all of HS, was like a 4.15.

Intook 8 APs and got two 4s and six 5s on tests, 1390 SAT and 790 writing, but my high school was very academically challenging and the bar/grade standard was higher, I got some B’s in my AP classes (despite apparently doing better than most nationwide as indicated by my test scores - again, bc my hs just graded harder), and a C(!!) in one of them that I still got a 5 on the exam for - I graduated with (gasp) a:

3.6

Everything is arbitrary and only standardized programs are that - standardized.

I think I am at least as academically successful as someone from another state or school district with a 4.7 who took like two APs and got 2s and 3s on those tests, with a sub-1200 SAT.

Just a little rant lol SO glad I’m not at my high school anymore - TIME TO HAVE FUN ROLL TIDE

(I didn’t apply to the honors program bc done with that stuff but I got great scholarships - wanted a fun college experience)

TLDR a 5.7 gpa makes me so angry bc that would LITERALLY be IMPOSSIBLE at my hs and it is honestly the definition of grade inflation.

- sincerely someone from a district that does the opposite (grade deflation)

Also just a note that grade deflation does NOT help students, in fact, it hurts. Some schools have so many applicants that they literally make first cuts based on numbers alone without looking at how the districts grade or rate classes

In Fl have kids with 6.0 gpas. There are many that take college courses starting summer after 9th. Then last two years all college courses. It's not grade inflation. If you make all As and get an AA you are 6.0 material.

I almost want to guess the person that posted that is from va bc that sounds like where I went to school. I think it’s unfair it the way things are graded isn’t taken into consideration - I had the same scale and a lot of aps- but my gpa was under 4.0 as well bc it was almost impossible to get over a 4.0 with our grading scale.

Isn’t there a math formula to get your unweighted gpa…

Rush based on what YOU value - if you value looks, makeup, designer clothing, social media… you can do very well for yourself to be in a house with women who share your interests and you can have a fantastic connection (I think???) with women who value similar things. This can set you up for social media success and ABSOLUTELY open doors for you in terms of a career in that world and networking opportunities in that world.

Think Ms USA pageant for these types of houses vs. Miss America for OR leadership/sisterhood houses ——

Miss USA - Is your house giving bids based on how you look in a swimsuit etc only plus some softball interview questions? Can you answer those softball interview questions while looking stunning and maintain a level of composure - bc this IS competitive and these days 18 year old women who look like maxim models are a dime a dozen, you DO need more. Miss USA is relatively new (and owned by Mr Orange), so another reason this all correlates.

Miss America - is your house giving bids based on HOW YOU LOOK and some softball interview questions, PLUS talent, leadership, personality, etc? Are they looking for a more well rounded woman and therefore you might be able to stand out more in looks if leadership is a little behind, or vice versa?

Once you’re out of school - every chapter is the same. Even three years out, even if you are meeting a bunch of only UA sorority alumni at an event, no one is going to shun you or not want to talk to you or not give you a networking or biz opportunity bc you were in sorority D+ vs sorority A- —— they are going to be excited to meet another UA alum who was Greek. My sister was an upper middle house at another SEC school and she’s in an east coast city with a ton of SEC people - she says she meets people from UA and other SEC schools all the time and once you’re out, it’s the Panhellenic sisterhood that prevails, because in the grand scheme of things, being In a sorority is a privilege and it connects us and makes us unique. She’s gotten a job from a woman who was in her chapter 15 years before, but she’s made friends w women who were in every type of house at these schools. No one cares how “good” your sorority was after school, they are proud to share the Greek experience.

Just another example of how we all GROW up - and put childish things away.

There is no reason ever to pay 10K per year to get attention for being considered hot. Pledge Hooter's and they will pay you.

I think many would say paying 10k to belong to an attractive group or 10k to belong to a well-rounded group is too much money.
