pref ranking computer system???

by: pnm

so for pref theoretically let’s say I have house ABC that I rank #1 and house XYZ I rank for #2.

if house XYZ ranks me in the 50s (random number) and house ABC ranks me in the 110s (random number), which house would I end up getting a bid from?

please nothing mean about how I’m being presumptuous I’m just trying to understand how this computer system works. thank you!!!

Hard to say depends on quota etc... if quota is 120 they bid match girls up until they reach quota if they haven’t reached your name when they reached quota you won’t get your first choice. If both houses fill to quota before they get to you you will be a quota addition to one of those two houses. There is a myth that if you are high on second choice list that’s what you get but that’s not true. You could be #1 on second houses list but if you match with your first choice that’s what you get. Confusing I know. Don’t stress. Just maximize your options and you will be a member of a sorority.

Probably ABC, if quota is for example 105. The computer will look at XYZ’s list and see that you’re #55 and then check your list. Since you didn’t list them #1 it’s not a match. It’s not likely that all 105 of ABC’s top girls will list ABC first, so at #110 you would likely get a bid. If by some freak of nature weirdness their list did fill up by #110, you’d be a quota addition to either house. How they decide which is a little random but I believe they do their best to go with the PNM’s wishes.

I’m not trying to get anyone’s hopes up but the computer does tend to favor the PNM at pref round.

That’s not getting hopes up. That’s the way bid matching work - it’s mutual selection which means since the pnm is on both bid lists somewhere, then the PNM’s rankings drive placement. As long as her #1 choice has not made quota yet, she will get it. And assuming both chapters are roughly equal in size, she would be added to her #1 as a QA if both were full before her name was on the list.

In a 2-house Pref, around 70% of PNM’s will get their first choice.

I mean that's true.

The problem is when a PNM doesn't accept the fact that they may have felt like they vibed well with their #1 house, but that house ranks them so low that they match with their #2 house.

That's what happens when you match with your #2. Then they're the house that wanted you, and your #1 ranked you really low because they wanted others over you.

That's a problem of someone not being willing to accept reality though. No one likes to admit that they were rejected.

as someone who ended up in my #2 preference, it actually made me so happy to know my chapter wanted me so much more than my #1 did. validated the whole "trust the process" thing lol

You are in the range of ABC's quota, you will get ABC. XYZ will not come into play at all if that happens.
XYZ will only become a factor if you are not with in ABC's quota range.
If you maximize your options (list both houses) and fall below both of their quota ranges, you will still be given a bid to one (usually the one with a smaller total number) as a quota addition, but you will never even know that happened.
