Why are some sororities called fraternities?

They were some of the first women’s groups when there were already a lot of fraternities so they were called “women’s fraternities” but at some point, new ones began to take the name of sorority

Gamma phi (I believe) was the first group to use the term sorority, so houses founded before them are “women’s fraternities” because that’s what they were founded as
