I think it's so wild when people (GDIs) say that Greeks pay for their friends lmao by that logic literally everyone pays for the friends they make in college through their tuition

Stupidest counter argument to the stupidest argument ever. people pay tuition to go to college and get a degree. the experience of college is a side benefit. imo, greeks don't pay for friends, they pay to live in a nice house and get booze

It got dislikes because any difinitive reason someone posits as to why people join greek life/pay dues is going to get refuted. You say people pay dues to live in the house and drink; okay well what about people who never live in their house or choose not to drink? Or schools where chapters are unhoused? Do you think girls in ADX joined to drink and party?

Alabama is a huge school, and for incoming students that can be really intimidating, even if you’re super confident and outgoing. Going greek is a great way to meet new people and create a smaller community and support system within the larger University. Yes, the chapters are huge, but it can be far easier to navigate the transition to college if you have that community. And that’s true for ANY organization that has fees. CHAARG for example is a great way for like-minded girls with similar interests to get to know each other, and that comes with dues too. As does joining any college political organization or an honors society or a club sport. But in each of these examples, Greek included, the dues go towards more than just partying. You don’t have to go Greek to make friends, but it’s a great way to do so and we shouldn’t hate on people who do.

They’re saying that the point of going to college is to get a degree. That’s what people are paying for. Anything else is an added benefit. Like good for everyone who makes friends in college either through Greek life or other stuff. But comparing the two is ridiculous.
