You'll probably get a buddy in your pledge class to make up for "big little," it'll be girls who didn't get bids during formal most likely. Also there's no guarantee you'll get a bid. New sororities are treated as bottom of the bottom until they prove otherwise. They will also not immediately have a house

Most new colonies spend extra time recruiting women on campus that are in leadership positions of other orgs but not in a sorority. Yes they do take some that drop from formal but a lot of new members in a new sorority will be stronger candidates who just never went through rush. And they typically bid all levels: freshman through seniors, so they can have a more well rounded group.

As a sophomore or higher you will have a great opportunity to become a leader in the new chapter right away. And yes they will have tons of events and attend/compete in Greek activities.

Unless SK does it differently than most, you will not have to go through formal recruitment next fall.

You'll get interviewed by the Chapter Consultants and maybe people from nationals or alumnae from the area. There might (emphasis on might) be a bid day where you "run home" to the Panhellenic community. Then all of the girls get together and get to form their own executive council. Yes, just straight after everyone gets their bids. That's why they're looking for girls with leadership. You'll have two chapter consultants who have received training from sigma kappa, they'll live here for the first year. Maybe a second year if the chapter is kind of struggling. As for events go, you'll be paying dues just like any sorority here so date parties, sisterhood events, etc, will happen.

Spring semester they will probably have COB since girls will drop, then in fall 2019 they will join in formal recruitment. Nationals & Chapter consultants will come help you with that so you can be on par.

TBH the bid that was extended was where you were meant to be. You might not be a fit for Sigma Kappa so now you are just gambling all the way. Girl, good luck.

Go for it! Being part of a colonizing chapter is great for your resume and great for U if A!! Don't listen to anyone who tells you differently. You have a chance to decide what direction this new chapter will go and that's exciting. Good luck!!!!

You're a fool for not accepting the bid given to you. I know you probably think you're being humble by trying to reach out to SK but in all honesty you were given a bid to where you should be. Does it hurt to be dropped from houses you really loved? Yes. Does it hurt to know you "fall through the cracks?" Yes. But does that mean you shouldn't give that house a chance? No. Everything happens for a reason. The house you got a bid from held so much opportunity and the fact that you just turned it away without even trying it is disappointing.

And in terms of SK, do you really think it'll be the "fun and cool" girls colonizing? If I'm being honest, SK will struggle immensely especially considering there's a big push back from a lot of current Greeks. They'll struggle to make a name for themselves for at least the first few years, they'll struggle to fill a pledge class and actually keep the girls around, and they'll struggle being introduced into a very established Greek system. And it's really a 50/50 chance of them succeeding or failing. I'm not saying this to be mean or anything either, it's just the truth. Yes, it would be amazing to see a new sorority succeed here, but it's going to be extremely hard... Alum know that, Panhellenic knows that, us actives know that, and you should know that too.

If you received a bid from a chapter you preffed at and put on your bid acceptance card, you didn't fall through the cracks. An amazing chapter saw potential in you, which is saying more than the places you didn't get a bid from.

It's honestly not too late. Contact the chapter you received a bid from and ask for another chance and you can maybe join the new member period just a little late. You're bound to that bid for a year anyhow. What's the harm in giving them a shot?

Maybe she doesn't have the $$ for the sorority and knows SK will be cheaper without a new house?!?!

Sorry, but these "holier than thou" comments are ridiculous. "You should appreciate where you end up," "you were a fool," or "you got into a great house," are all BS. These same women prob talk crap about these same houses and/or have "sisters" who do and never stick up for them. PNM, do what makes you happy. It may not work out, but you never know. Also, let's stop pretending like we owe sorority houses ANYTHING. So what they gave a "bid," yall acting like they stood in front of a bullet for her. 1. You didn't "fall through the cracks" if you got a bid. I would severely adjust your attitude if you're interested in SK's colony because starting a new chapter is HARD WORK. It sounds like you want to be a cool girl and not part of a real sisterhood....I'd do some soul searching before you interview with SK next fall.

2. Clearing up some confusion on the colonization process from above comments. Here is the process for colonization:

-SK will probably participate in IWT's only, just to give every pnm a brief introduction to who they are and what their recruitment process will be. You do not need to participate in formal to rush SK though.

-After formal rush, SK's colonization will start. Alumnae and national officers will interview pnms from all four classes. Those who make it past the interview process will probably be invited to a sisterhood or Philanthropy based event and then to Pref if SK wants to extend a bid.

-Getting a bid to a colony is NOT a given. Alumnae and officers want to have the right mix of women and get the chapter off to a good start. To give you perspective, DG colonized at Arkansas last year and took 250 of the 500 pnms who interviewed.

-There will be some type of Bid Day celebration. You won't have a big sis but instead a "twin." Chapter leaders will be elected almost immediately as will participation in the Greek community.

-After the colony goes through the new member period, the chapter will be installed as a full SK chapter. This will be in the fall.

-SK will probably take a smaller class of COB in the spring as actives have other upperclassmen friends who missed out & want in.

If you're interested, get a SK rec lined up. Make good grades this year. Join and be involved in 2-3 solid campus organizations. Make friends in the Greek community. Same advice I'd give any sophomore rushing.
