bid chances??

by: pnm

I signed up for rush, but I wanted to know what y'all think my chances of getting a bid are because I'm terrified everyone will drop me for my gpa. I barely have a 3.0 gpa (its a 3.08), but I have good social skills and I'm average to above average looking. Im also from oos but still in the south. I have gotten letters of rec for almost every house. Should I wait a year to rush or do you think I will get a bid somewhere???

I think you'll get a bid, but be prepared for big cuts after IWTs. I definitely wouldn't wait a year because you might love where you end up!

Honestly I would go for it, you're rounded up to a 3.1 and that's really not as bad as it could be.

The thing is that if you barely had a 3.0 in high school it WILL be hard for you to maintain above a 3.0 in college too - after all, college is harder. The common wisdom used to be that when you go to college you should except your GPA to drop somewhere around .05 down from your high school GPA, at least in the first semester or two. It's probably better bet to rush now, accept the losses in terms of grade cuts, and get to spend 4 years in a house instead of praying to god everything in college works out for you academically and then rushing as a sophomore which is a disadvantage in itself.

@active That is a fair point. It depends on the person and the classes you take. But I still think it's safer to assume college will be harder than high school, barring extenuating circumstances for either.

At the majority of houses the hard line that they cut at is a 3.0. You will probably face some large cuts after the first round from the houses with high GPAs, but because you have above a 3.0 you should definitely rush this year!

No gonna lie... You'll definitely be cut from a few houses that care more about grades, like AXO, XO, AGD, and PM. However, you'll definitely still have a good chance at a lot of other houses. That being said, I think you should totally rush... You never know where you'll end up and I think you'd regret not rushing your freshman year. Obviously, if you don't like the house you end up in, then you can drop and re-rush, this time with, hopefully, better grades.

Even these might take two or three grade risks if they love the girl.

I'm in a house that cares a lot about grades and we really only take grade risks if we know the girl personally. A few 10 minute conversations just aren't worth the risk for our gpa

Legacy won't matter

You'd have to be an incredibly important legacy for a high GPA house to take a grade risk... And I don't mean your mom/grandma just helps here and there with the local alum chapter... I mean you're from an important family or something.
