It's mainly just a Bama thing. I haven't heard any other schools use those terms in the way we use them.

Old Row = Magnolia Drive and New Row = Lem Morrison Drive. But some Old Row (as in elite) fraternities are located on New Row, and vice versa.

The top sororities (KD/Alpha Gam/Chi O/Phi Mu/ADPi) don't really have a designation these days. In the past some folks included Pi Phi in the top tier as well and called it the "Sweet Six."

UGA Greeks have started using Old Row and New Row too, but it's a fairly recent thing.

"Old Row" originally referred to the FRATERNITY houses on the west side of campus. In the 1960s, land on the east side opened and fraternities began building on "new row."
The term originally had nothing to do with sororities.
Now it refers to the more in-demand Greek groups on campus....more or less.

UT-Austin has PKT which is basically Old Row on steroids. There absolutely is no chance of getting in if you're OOS unless you're from Newport Coast, CA or Greenwich, CT.

At UT it's the Big Six: Pi Phi, Kappa, Theta, XO, DDD, and ZTA. PKT is the top three in that group because they're the oldest and wealthiest houses. Most of the Big Six but especially PKT are known for being openly mean to PNMs they have no interest in.

"UT" meaning University of Texas....in this area of the country, "UT" could also mean University of Tennessee.
PKT - Phi Kappa Tau fraternity

I'm actually FROM Austin, so believe me when I say it's PKT first. Big Six is a thing, and many girls would rather drop than be in something other than Big Six. But the OP asked for "Old Row" which I assume to mean houses where connections, money, and especially old money matter more than anything else. At UT-Austin, sororities exist solely as a social club. Money, connections, and looks are the biggest, and I would say only, determining factors. To get into the Austin campus, you need to have good grades anyways, so grades don't matter. Sororities don't do many philanthropy activities anyways so being a good Christian lady doesn't matter. It's worse to be poor than to have a mom with a wine problem.

It's absolutely nuts and superficial. But the rest of the student body doesn't care about sororities, and sororities don't care about the student body. There are enough prestigious orgs to join on campus and parties in Austin that no one really NEEDS Greek Life to have a social life like here. PKT can afford to be rude because they always get the girls they want, and PNMs feel insulted for a week, but there are rarely any inter-sorority relations, so everyone just ignores each other for the rest of the 4 years.

For those wondering, PKT stands for Pi Phi, Kappa, and Theta. It is not a reference to a frat.

PKT= Pi Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Theta.

My sister goes to UT. Pi Phi is known as being the meanest of all the houses. Her best friend was treated terrible by Pi Phi during recruitment even though she was wanted by other top tier sororities.

Up until recently (or maybe they still do it, not sure) pi phi at UT would hold a dance party the first round with basically no talking. Really sends a "we know who we want and it's probably not you" vibe

As a senior it seems so funny to me that anyone would want a house just because they're ranked higher than another house. Imagine how not-fun it would be to be in the "mean girl" house. I love my sisters and feel like they'll be life-long friends. No amount of status could make up for being in a house with girls you don't respect.

The UT system is completely disfunctional. Quota hasn't gone up, no new sorority since KD in 1981. Only 10 per cent of the students go Greek.
UT is a great school but Greek life at Alabama is much more fun and welcoming.

At UT quota is consistently small compared with SEC schools because so many PNMs would rather drop than take a bid to a house they consider beneath them. It's not just about being a snowflake, though -- girls in lower-tier houses frequently get disrespected by Big Six sororities and Big Four fraternities.

Plus, there's no real Greek row on campus -- most of the houses are dispersed in residential neighborhoods just outside campus, and the chapters are strictly responsible for their own housing. A new group would have a huge hurdle to overcome because real estate is both scarce and expensive.
