Morgan State University - MSU Overview

  About Greek Life at MSU

Morgan State University is a historically Black university in Baltimore, Maryland, and that context shapes everything about how Greek life works on campus. The organizations here are rooted in the Divine Nine — the historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council — and that's the backbone of the Greek system at MSU.

On the fraternity side, you've got several NPHC chapters active on campus, including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta, along with Alpha Nu Omega and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia rounding things out. The sorority presence includes Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. It's a smaller Greek community overall, but that's pretty typical for an HBCU of Morgan's size — the focus is quality over quantity.

Intake, not rush, is how you join NPHC organizations. It's a different process than what you'd see at a big SEC school with formal recruitment weeks and bid days. NPHC intake tends to be selective, membership-driven, and tied to the national chapter standards of each organization. Timing and requirements vary by chapter and semester, so you usually have to keep your eyes open and build relationships first.

Greek life at an HBCU like Morgan carries real cultural weight. Strolling — the competitive, choreographed step and stroll performances — is a huge deal. Greeks show up at yard shows, homecoming events, and community service initiatives in visible ways. Homecoming at Morgan is a major event on the MEAC calendar, and Greek organizations are central to that whole week.

Don't expect Greek Row or chapter houses here — that's not really how NPHC culture operates at most HBCUs. Chapters organize through the university and do their work on the yard, in the community, and through events rather than out of dedicated housing. The presence is felt on campus even without a physical house attached to each chapter.
