Coppin University - CU Overview

  About Greek Life at CU

Coppin State University is a historically Black university in Baltimore, Maryland, and that identity shapes everything about how Greek life works on campus. The organizations here are all NPHC — that's the National Pan-Hellenic Council, also known as the Divine Nine — plus a couple of additional fraternal organizations that serve a similar mission-driven model. You won't find an IFC or Panhellenic council here the way you would at a large state school.

The fraternity side includes well-known names like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta, along with Alpha Nu Omega and Delta Chi Xi rounding out the fraternal presence. On the sorority side, you've got the four NPHC women's organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's a solid representation of the NPHC structure at a school this size.

NPHC intake is a different process than the formal rush weekends you'd see at bigger schools. It's membership intake, not recruitment, and it's generally more selective and structured. Chapters control their own timelines, and the process is taken seriously. If you're interested, the best move is to just get involved on campus first, get to know members organically, and let things develop from there.

Coppin is a smaller commuter-heavy campus, so Greek life isn't the dominant social engine the way it might be at a large residential university. That said, NPHC organizations at HBCUs carry a lot of cultural weight. Strolling, step shows, and chapter-hosted events are genuinely a big deal and draw real campus attention. Chapters are active in community service and philanthropy, which is core to the NPHC tradition. Don't expect Greek Row or chapter houses — that's not the setup here, and it's not the setup at most schools with this type of Greek structure.
