PNM KNOW I’LL BE FINE ANYWHERE!

by: Fine

PNM here, & wherever I end up, I know I’ll be fine. I’ll make bonds, have fun, contribute to the community & enhance myself. However a few of my friends also registered and all they talk about is WHAT SRATs they do NOT want to be in. How can they worry about that?!…How can I help them chill? Anyway, HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON!

The rude awakening is it really is not up to them. They do not get to decide where they end up. They can only do their best. That is why they need to focus on best fit and not “the best”. Look being pretty is not enough. There are a lot of pretty girls and every sorority has pretty girls. Avoid the tears and go in with an open mind like you have.

Pnm's get to rank the sororities however they want during recruitment, but those ranks have no effect on how the sororities rank them. The sororities don't take the pnm's choices into consideration, they don't even see them. Pnm's will be released by chapters they have ranked high, and will return to chapters they have ranked low, and that's just the way it is because the sororities are choosing their new members, not the other way around. A pnm's ranks only come into play in the UNCOMMON scenario that more chapters want to invite her back than a round allows, only then will the lower ranked chapter(s) drop off her schedule.

The best pnm's can do is to let the chapters they love know it and hope for the best, but more important is to keep an open mind and heart to the ones who invite them back. Plenty of girls land in houses where they are disappointed at first but end up VERY happy, and looking back on recruitment they go "what was I thinking".

A final word for pnm's who think they can game the system: sometimes pnm's try to purposely get themselves dropped by sororities they swear they don't want, making a point of showing disinterest and even rudeness at these chapters. While this tactic will certainly have the desired effect, it does NOTHING to get them ranked high enough to make the invitation lists for other sororities. In fact, word gets around quickly; friends in other chapters will be alerted, and those sororities will drop them too. Nobody wants that kind of member. There is also the likelihood of being reported to panhellenic, in which case they will be removed from recruitment altogether.

Rush is an emotional time for everyone. Don't let emotions take over and ruin your possibilities. You are not in high school now.

The biggest mistake PNM can make is getting hung up on a couple of houses or not giving all the houses a chance. I said before but I will again ALL THE HOUSES AT UGA ARE GOOD. If you write off some sororities at the start because you feel you are too good for them that is a big mistake.

Not having an open mind only leads to tears. Everyone gets cut. I don't care how many houses want to see you the first day. In the end you can only be in one place and sororities cannot take everyone. You need to accept that you will get cut from houses you like. You will also be kept by some houses you did not rank high. It is part of the process and how things work.

As things get narrowed down there is a good reason why you are getting the houses you are and the ones that decide to have you come back. That does not mean you could not fit into other houses but at that point it really is not an option if you were cut. It does mean those chapters who kept you have identified you as someone who they feel matches them well (at least up until that point). Even if you don't fully see it.

That is a compliment because ALL the sororities cut people. If you think some are less selective than others, well you are wrong. They all are looking for members who will fit in with them. Each sorority has their own culture, and some are more opposite than others. Some are more similar. It is best to trust the process and keep an open mind.

Every sorority at UGA has something positive to offer. They all participate in the same social events like formals, semi-formals, socials with frats, and date nights. What you need to understand is the process and not get hung up on greek rank lists. If you do that you will be happy. I promise once you are in a sorority you will never give a thought to ranking again. It just does not matter because at UGA all the sororities are good.
