South Carolina State University - SCSU Overview

  About Greek Life at SCSU

South Carolina State University is an HBCU in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and like most HBCUs, its Greek system runs entirely through the NPHC — the National Pan-Hellenic Council. There's no IFC or Panhellenic council here. The nine historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the "Divine Nine" are the framework, and SCSU has representation from several of them on campus.

The active fraternities include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That covers a solid cross-section of the Divine Nine, which is pretty typical for a mid-size HBCU like SCSU.

Membership intake at NPHC organizations works differently than what you might picture from typical fraternity or sorority rush. There's no formal recruitment week with open houses and bid day. Instead, each organization runs its own intake process on its own timeline, and those processes are a lot more selective and involved. Most chapters require you to be enrolled for a semester or more before you're even eligible.

At SCSU, Greek-lettered organizations are genuinely woven into campus culture. Step shows are a big deal — chapters compete and perform at campus events throughout the year, and those are some of the more anticipated social events on campus. Probate shows, where new members are publicly presented after completing intake, are also a significant campus moment that draws a crowd.

Don't expect fraternity or sorority houses here. NPHC chapters at HBCUs traditionally don't operate chapter houses the way IFC fraternities at large predominantly white institutions do. Chapters are active through programming, community service, and events rather than residential chapter life.

SCSU's enrollment sits on the smaller side, so the Greek community reflects that — it's more intimate, and active members tend to be pretty visible on campus. Community service and philanthropy are central to how these organizations operate, consistent with the broader NPHC tradition of scholarship and public service.
