Louisiana State University - LSU Overview

  About Greek Life at LSU

Football Saturdays and fraternity row go hand in hand at LSU, one of the flagship SEC schools and a place where the social calendar is built around Tiger football, Mardi Gras, and the organizations that have been part of campus since the 1800s. Baton Rouge is a real college town, and that energy feeds directly into how big and active the Greek system is here.

LSU's Greek community is organized across several councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) covers most of the traditionally recognized fraternities, while the Panhellenic Council oversees the sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities on campus, and there are also Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) organizations active here. That means the system is genuinely broad, pulling in chapters from a lot of different backgrounds and traditions.

The number of active chapters — both fraternity and sorority side — is substantial for a school this size, and the level of engagement on sites like this one reflects that. Recruitment at LSU is a serious process. Formal Panhellenic recruitment happens in the fall and draws a large number of women through structured rounds. IFC rush is a bit more informal by comparison, but it's still competitive and moves fast. If you're thinking about going through, it pays to do your research ahead of time.

Fraternity and sorority housing is a real part of campus life here. Many of the larger chapters have houses on or near Greek Row, and those houses become social hubs, especially around football weekends. Philanthropy is also a consistent part of the culture — most chapters do fundraisers and community service events throughout the year, which is pretty standard for a system this size at an SEC school.

Going Greek at LSU is genuinely a significant part of the undergraduate social experience for a meaningful chunk of the student body. That said, the school is large enough that there's plenty going on outside of it too. The chapters here span IFC, Panhellenic, NPHC, and MGC, so the overall system is pretty well-rounded in terms of the types of organizations represented.
