Sojourner-Douglass College - SDC Overview

  About Greek Life at SDC

Sojourner-Douglass College was a small, private historically Black college located in Baltimore, Maryland, operating for decades before closing in 2017. Its mission was rooted in serving adult learners and the surrounding community, and that focus shaped just about every aspect of campus life — including how students engaged with organizations outside the classroom.

The Greek presence at SDC falls under the NPHC umbrella, which is standard for HBCUs and institutions with a historically Black student body. NPHC organizations — the Divine Nine — operate very differently from the IFC or Panhellenic model you might know from larger predominantly white institutions. There's no formal rush week with open houses and bid day. Instead, intake processes are typically more selective, more private, and happen on each chapter's own timeline. It's a slower, more relationship-driven process compared to what you'd see at a big state school.

Zeta Phi Beta has had a presence here, making it part of the school's smaller Greek community. At an institution like SDC, with its focus on nontraditional and adult students, Greek life naturally occupies a more modest role in day-to-day campus activity compared to a large residential university. It's not the centerpiece of social life the way it might be somewhere with a sprawling main quad and tens of thousands of undergrads.

Chapter houses aren't part of the picture at a school like this — NPHC chapters historically don't operate house-based models the way IFC fraternities do, and SDC's urban Baltimore setting reinforces that. Community service, step shows, and public events tied to each organization's national philanthropic mission tend to be the main ways these chapters make their presence known on and around campus.
