Saint Marys University of Minnesota - SMUM Overview

  About Greek Life at SMUM

Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is a small Catholic liberal arts school in Winona, a river town tucked along the Mississippi in the southeastern corner of the state. The campus itself is pretty tight-knit by nature — you're talking about a school where most people know each other within a semester or two — and that context shapes what organized Greek-letter life looks like here.

The Greek presence at SMUM is on the smaller, more intimate side. The main organization operating on campus is Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a professional music fraternity with a long national history. It's not a social fraternity in the traditional IFC mold — Phi Mu Alpha is focused on music, brotherhood, and the promotion of musical activity on campus. There's no active IFC, Panhellenic, NPHC, or MGC council here, so the structure you'd find at a larger university with multiple chapters and formal Greek councils doesn't really apply.

Because of the school's size and its Catholic identity, social life tends to center more around residence hall communities, campus ministry, club sports, and student organizations than around Greek life as a dominant force. That's just the nature of a school this size — it's not the kind of place where Greek Row is a defining feature of the campus geography or social calendar. There are no chapter houses tied to Greek organizations here in the way you'd see at a Big Ten school or even a mid-size state university.

Phi Mu Alpha chapters typically recruit members who are involved in music programs, so if you're a music major or heavily involved in ensembles, that's the most relevant point of contact with Greek-letter organizations at SMUM. The fraternity's activities tend to revolve around musical events, performances, and community engagement through the arts rather than the philanthropy weeks and formal recruitment weekends you'd associate with traditional Greek systems.

If you came to SMUM expecting a large Greek system, it's just not that kind of school. The community here is shaped more by its size, its mission, and its regional character than by Greek-letter organizations.
