Purdue University Calumet - PUC Overview

  About Greek Life at PUC

Purdue University Calumet, now officially part of Purdue University Northwest, is a commuter-heavy campus in Hammond, Indiana, serving the Chicago metro's south suburban and Northwest Indiana communities. The school draws a lot of working students and locals, and that shapes the overall social culture here — campus life looks a bit different than a traditional residential university.

The Greek community at PUC is on the smaller side, with a handful of fraternities and no currently active sororities. The organizations present are Alpha Phi Alpha and Tau Phi Sigma. Alpha Phi Alpha is one of the oldest and most historically significant Black fraternities in the country, founded in 1906 and part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Tau Phi Sigma is a local or regional fraternity operating independently. The presence of an NPHC organization points to the council structure that frames Greek life here — it's not an IFC or Panhellenic-dominated system.

Because this is a commuter school without a traditional residential campus vibe, Greek life functions more as a community within the campus rather than a central organizing force for social life. Chapters tend to focus on brotherhood, community service, and events rather than the party-and-housing model you'd associate with a Big Ten flagship. Don't expect Greek Row — chapter housing isn't really part of the setup here.

Recruitment and intake processes at a school like this tend to be more informal and relationship-driven than the structured rush weeks you'd see at larger universities. For NPHC organizations especially, the membership intake process is a deliberate and often semester-long process, distinct from traditional IFC rush. It's a more intentional path to membership.

Greek organizations here are active in campus programming and community outreach, which tends to be the main way chapters build their presence and identity on a commuter campus. The overall scene is intimate and close-knit, shaped directly by the character of the school itself.
