Pratt Institute - PU Overview

  About Greek Life at PU

Pratt Institute is a specialized art and design school in Brooklyn, New York, and its Greek community reflects that focused, creative identity. With just a handful of active chapters — one fraternity and two sororities — this is a smaller, more intimate Greek presence compared to what you'd find at a large state university.

The organizations here include Kappa Sigma on the fraternity side, and Sigma Sigma Sigma and Theta Phi Alpha representing Panhellenic. Because Pratt doesn't have the sprawling multi-council infrastructure you'd see at bigger schools, there's no IFC in the traditional large-campus sense, and the Greek footprint overall is modest relative to the student body. That's pretty typical for specialized art and design schools, where student culture tends to organize around studios, disciplines, and creative communities more than Greek chapters.

Don't expect the big state-school rush experience here. Recruitment tends to be lower-key, more personal, and less of the mass formal rush event you'd associate with a SEC or ACC school. Chapters are small, so getting to know members happens pretty organically.

Housing is another thing that sets this apart from bigger Greek systems. Pratt chapters don't have the fraternity row or chapter houses you might picture. Members live in regular campus or off-campus housing like most other students.

Because Pratt's identity is so rooted in art and design, Greek life exists alongside — and sometimes intersects with — a campus culture that's heavily project-based and studio-driven. Philanthropy and social events do happen through these chapters, in line with their national organizations' programs and traditions. It's just one piece of a campus social scene that's shaped as much by creative work and studio life as anything else.
