Johnson C. Smith University - JCSU Overview

  About Greek Life at JCSU

Johnson C. Smith University is a historically Black university in Charlotte, North Carolina, and like most HBCUs, the Greek system here operates through the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the Divine Nine. That's the framework you need to understand before anything else about this campus's Greek scene.

All nine NPHC organizations are represented at JCSU, covering the full lineup of fraternities and sororities that make up the Divine Nine. On the fraternity side you've got Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. The sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's the complete set, which isn't something every HBCU can say.

HBCU Greek culture runs differently than what you'd see at a large PWI. There's no formal rush week with bid day banners and mass intake. NPHC membership is interest-based and chapter-driven, with intake processes that are much more selective and deliberate. Chapters stay smaller by design, and that's not a flaw — it's just how NPHC orgs work everywhere, not just here.

On an HBCU campus, Greek organizations tend to carry real visibility. Yard shows, step shows, and probate reveals are genuine campus events. Philanthropy and community service are central to NPHC culture, so chapters here are active in that space in ways that go beyond just fundraising tables. When a chapter crosses new members, people show up to watch.

Chapter houses in the traditional sense aren't really part of the NPHC model, and JCSU is no different. Chapters don't maintain dedicated Greek Row housing. Instead, the yard and campus common spaces are where Greek identity shows up most visibly — through strolling, colors, and organization gear.

JCSU is a smaller school, so the Greek community reflects that scale. Chapters are close-knit, and members tend to be pretty well known across campus.
