Simon Fraser University - SFU Overview

  About Greek Life at SFU

SFU is a commuter-heavy research university perched on top of Burnaby Mountain just outside Vancouver, and that campus setup shapes pretty much everything about student social life here — including the Greek scene. Most students commute, the campus doesn't have a traditional quad or college-town atmosphere, and social life is more fragmented than at a residential school. That context matters when you're trying to understand what Greek life actually looks like here.

The system is on the smaller side, with a handful of fraternities and sororities operating on campus. The organizations include Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi Delta Epsilon, Phi Kappa Pi, Delta Alpha Theta, Alpha Pi Phi, Kappa Beta Gamma, and Tau Sigma Phi. It's a more intimate community than you'd find at a large American state school, and the chapters tend to operate with a tighter-knit membership as a result.

Don't expect the traditional IFC or Panhellenic council structure you might know from big American universities. Canadian schools generally run Greek life a bit differently — less formal rush weeks, less infrastructure around recruitment, and chapters that often organize independently rather than through a unified governing body. Recruitment here tends to be more word-of-mouth and event-based than the structured formal recruitment cycles you'd see at a SEC or Big Ten school.

There are no Greek Row houses here. SFU's campus layout and the general culture around Canadian university Greek life means chapters meet and host events in other venues rather than chapter houses. Philanthropy and social events still happen, but the experience is built around community and membership rather than residential life.

Greek life is genuinely a niche part of campus culture at SFU rather than a central one. That's not unusual for a Canadian commuter school of this size. For students who do get involved, the chapters offer a social structure that can be harder to find organically at a school where a lot of people drive in, attend class, and head home.
