Prairie View A&M University is one of the oldest historically Black universities in Texas, and that legacy runs straight through its Greek system. The organizations here are all members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the NPHC — which is the governing council for the historically Black fraternities and sororities known collectively as the Divine Nine. You'll also find Sigma Lambda Beta, a multicultural fraternity that rounds out the active chapters on campus.

The fraternities represented include Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Sigma Lambda Beta. On the sorority side, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta all have a presence at PVAMU. That's a solid lineup of NPHC organizations for a campus this size.

NPHC recruitment works differently than what you'd see at a school with IFC or Panhellenic chapters. There's no formal rush week with open houses and bid day celebrations. Instead, interest meetings are held when chapters are actively looking to bring in new members, and the process — often called "intake" — is more selective and structured. Chapters aren't always intake-active every semester, so timing matters a lot if you're interested in joining.

At an HBCU like Prairie View, Greek life carries real cultural weight. Stepshows are a major part of campus life, and probate shows — where new members are publicly presented after crossing — draw serious crowds. These aren't just social events; they're traditions tied to the broader legacy of Black Greek-letter organizations and their emphasis on scholarship, service, and community uplift. Chapters here are generally involved in community service and campus programming throughout the year.

Most NPHC chapters at PVAMU don't maintain dedicated chapter houses the way IFC fraternities do at large state schools. The Greek presence is felt more through events, yard activity, and visibility on campus than through a Greek Row setup.
