Baker University - BU Overview

  About Greek Life at BU

Baker University is a small private liberal arts school in Baldwin City, Kansas, and its Greek community fits that intimate campus feel pretty well. There are a handful of fraternities and sororities here, and while the system isn't huge, it plays a real role in campus social life given how small the overall student body is.

On the fraternity side, you've got Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sigma, and Sigma Phi Epsilon operating under an IFC umbrella. Sororities include Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, and Zeta Tau Alpha under Panhellenic, plus Zeta Phi Beta representing the NPHC side. Having an NPHC presence at a school this size is worth knowing about — it gives the overall Greek community a bit more range than you might expect at a small Division II school in rural Kansas.

Recruitment at a school like Baker tends to be pretty low-key compared to what you'd see at a large state university. The campus is small enough that you probably already know people in fraternities and sororities before formal recruitment even happens. It's a lot less anonymous than going through rush at a school with thousands of students.

Greek organizations at Baker tend to be involved in philanthropy events and campus programming throughout the year, which is pretty standard for schools of this size where chapters have to be active to stay visible. The social scene at small liberal arts schools is often closely tied to Greek life just because there aren't as many other venues or large campus events competing for attention.

Chapter housing exists on or near campus, giving the organizations a physical presence that helps anchor them in day-to-day campus life. For a school Baker's size, that kind of home base matters — it's where a lot of the community-building actually happens outside of formal events.
