University at Buffalo, The State University of New York - UBSUNY Overview

  About Greek Life at UBSUNY

UB is a large public research university in the SUNY system, with a student body big enough that Greek life occupies its own corner of campus life without defining the whole thing. The system here covers multiple councils — IFC and Panhellenic handle the more traditional fraternity and sorority chapters, while NPHC and MGC organizations also have a presence, giving the overall community a broader range of chapter types than you'd find at a smaller school.

The fraternity side has a solid number of active chapters, and the sorority side, while smaller in terms of number of organizations, still offers some real options. Chapters span the usual mix of general, multicultural, and historically Black organizations, so the community isn't just one type of Greek experience.

UB's campus spans two main areas — North Campus in Amherst and South Campus closer to Buffalo proper — and most of the Greek activity is centered on North Campus. Some chapters have houses or on-campus facilities, but this isn't a school with a sprawling Greek Row where every chapter has a massive house lined up next to each other. It's a more spread-out setup.

Rush and recruitment happen in the fall and spring, following pretty standard IFC and Panhellenic timelines. Because the school itself is so large, Greek life represents a smaller percentage of the overall student body compared to schools where Greek participation is a central part of the campus identity. That said, chapters here are genuinely active — philanthropy events, mixers, and organization-sponsored programming show up consistently throughout the academic year.

The surrounding Buffalo area adds to the social scene outside of strictly on-campus events, so Greek chapters here tend to operate as part of a larger social ecosystem rather than being the primary driver of it. The community has been discussed and reviewed enough online to show consistent activity and engagement across multiple chapters over the years.
