Ashland University - AU Overview

  About Greek Life at AU

Ashland University is a mid-size private school in Ashland, Ohio — a small city in the northern part of the state — and its Greek system reflects that setting pretty well. It's an intimate community with a handful of fraternities and sororities, not a massive row of mansion houses like you'd see at a Big Ten school, but it's an active part of campus life for the students who are involved.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC-affiliated chapters: Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Kappa Psi, and Tau Kappa Epsilon. Sororities fall under Panhellenic and include Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta, and Theta Phi Alpha. There's no NPHC or MGC presence listed on campus currently, so the Greek system here is structured around those two traditional councils.

Recruitment at a school like AU tends to be more relaxed and personal than what you'd experience at a larger state university. Because the chapters are smaller, you get to know people quickly, and the process feels a lot less like a production and more like a series of genuine conversations. That's pretty typical for private schools of this size in the Midwest.

AU is affiliated with the Ashland Theological Seminary and has historically had a faith-based institutional identity, which shapes the overall campus culture in a pretty grounded way. Greek organizations here tend to lean into philanthropy and community involvement as a core part of what they do, which fits with the university's broader emphasis on service and character.

In terms of housing, AU's Greek chapters don't operate in the same way as schools with dedicated Greek rows or large chapter houses. Chapters are integrated into campus life without that kind of physical separation from the rest of the student body, which keeps the community feel pretty cohesive overall.

If you're coming from a city or a bigger school environment, the scale here might feel different from what you expected — but for students who do plug into one of these chapters, it tends to be a meaningful part of their time at AU.
