Benedict College is a historically Black college in Columbia, South Carolina, and the Greek system there reflects the HBCU tradition of Divine Nine organizations being central to campus identity. All of the fraternities and sororities active on campus come from the National Pan-Hellenic Council — you've got Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Iota Phi Theta, and Phi Beta Sigma on the fraternity side, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho representing the sororities.
At a school like BC, Greek life isn't just a social outlet — it carries a lot of historical and cultural weight. The NPHC orgs have deep roots in the civil rights movement and Black professional networks, and that legacy is very much present on campus. Membership isn't just about social events; it's tied to leadership, community service, and lifelong brotherhood or sisterhood in a pretty serious way.
Intake processes for NPHC organizations are different from the open recruitment you'd see at schools with IFC or Panhellenic councils. There's no formal rush week where you go house to house. Instead, interest processes are more selective and happen on the organization's own timeline, often with GPA minimums and other requirements that vary by chapter.
Don't expect Greek Row or chapter houses here. Most HBCU Greek chapters operate without dedicated housing, so the presence of these organizations is felt through yard shows, step shows, community events, and philanthropic programming rather than through a physical house. Step shows in particular are a big deal on HBCU campuses and are usually one of the more anticipated events of the year.
The overall Greek community at BC is smaller and more intimate compared to large state schools, but within the HBCU context that's pretty standard. The organizations that are here are active and connected to both the campus and the broader Columbia community.
