Tulane University - TU Overview

  About Greek Life at TU

Tulane sits in Uptown New Orleans, and that setting shapes basically everything about campus social life, including the Greek system. The city itself is a constant draw, but fraternities and sororities still hold a significant place in how students socialize, especially in the first couple of years on campus.

The system is organized across a few councils. IFC oversees the fraternities, which include chapters like Sigma Chi, Phi Gamma Delta, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and several others. Panhellenic covers the NPC sororities, with chapters including Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, and a handful more. NPHC is also represented through historically Black fraternities and sororities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Phi Beta Sigma, among others. Altogether it adds up to a fairly active system for a school of Tulane's size.

Rush for IFC chapters typically happens in the fall. Panhellenic recruitment follows a more structured format with formal rounds, preference events, and Bid Day. The process is competitive but generally accessible, and a decent chunk of the undergraduate student body ends up going through it.

Housing is a mixed situation. Some chapters have houses or dedicated spaces on or near campus, but Tulane isn't a school where you'll find a single Greek Row with a line of massive houses. The footprint is more spread out, and a lot of chapter life happens in rented spaces or on-campus facilities.

Philanthropy is genuinely woven into how chapters operate here. Many organizations participate in Tulane's broader service culture, which the university emphasizes pretty heavily through its Center for Public Service. Beyond that, Mardi Gras is obviously the elephant in the room — being in New Orleans means Greek organizations get involved in one of the biggest party cultures in the country, and that bleeds into how social life runs from January through February.

Overall, Greek life is a meaningful part of Tulane's social fabric without being the only game in town. The city gives students plenty of options outside of chapter events, which makes the system feel like one thread in a bigger picture rather than the defining feature of the undergraduate experience.
