Indiana University Southeast - IUS Overview

  About Greek Life at IUS

Indiana University Southeast sits just across the river from Louisville, Kentucky, and serves a mostly commuter student body in New Albany, Indiana. It's a regional campus — smaller, more locally focused, and without the big residential college experience you'd associate with the main IU campus in Bloomington. The Greek system here reflects that reality: it's a smaller, more close-knit community than what you'd find at a flagship university.

There are a handful of fraternities and sororities active on campus, operating under both IFC/Panhellenic structures and NPHC. On the fraternity side, you've got Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Alpha, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Phi Beta Sigma. The sororities include Alpha Phi, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Phi Beta. That covers both Panhellenic and NPHC representation, which means there are options for students across different backgrounds and interests.

Because IUS is predominantly a commuter school, Greek life doesn't dominate campus the way it does at big residential universities. Most chapters don't have dedicated houses, so the experience is less about Greek Row and more about events, meetings, and service projects spread across campus. Recruitment tends to be more informal and accessible here — there's less of the intense formal rush process you'd hear about at larger schools.

Greek organizations at IUS tend to put real emphasis on community service and philanthropy, which is pretty common at smaller regional campuses where chapters build their identity around campus involvement rather than social events alone. Chapters participate in campus life through Greek Week, volunteer initiatives, and collaboration with student organizations. It's a more integrated part of campus rather than a separate social world.

Since much of the student population is commuter or part-time, Greek life here draws members who are intentionally choosing to get more involved on campus. That tends to make chapter membership feel more personal — people genuinely know each other, and the organizations stay active through consistent effort from their members.
