Shawnee State University - SSU Overview

  About Greek Life at SSU

Shawnee State University is a small public university in Portsmouth, Ohio — a town along the Ohio River that has a tight-knit, working-class feel. The campus itself is pretty compact, and that carries over into the Greek community, which is on the smaller side. There's one active fraternity and one active sorority currently operating here, so this isn't the kind of school where Greek life dominates the social scene the way it might at a big state university.

The two organizations present are Tau Kappa Epsilon on the fraternity side and Theta Phi Alpha on the sorority side. TKE is one of the largest international fraternities in North America, and Theta Phi Alpha is a national sorority with chapters across the country, so both are connected to established national organizations beyond just the SSU campus.

Because the system is intimate, recruitment here tends to be more personal and low-key compared to the massive formal rush processes you'd see at bigger schools. You're not dealing with hundreds of members or a Greek row lined with chapter houses. The community is small enough that people actually get to know each other quickly, and involvement tends to be pretty hands-on by default.

SSU as a whole is a commuter-heavy campus with a lot of non-traditional students, which naturally affects how central Greek life is to the overall college experience. For students who do get involved, though, it connects them to philanthropy work, national networking, and a social circle that can be hard to find otherwise at a school of this size. Chapter housing arrangements can vary, so it's worth checking directly with each organization about how they currently operate on campus.
