Voorhees College - VC Overview

  About Greek Life at VC

Voorhees College is a small, historically Black college in Denmark, South Carolina, and its Greek system reflects that close-knit HBCU identity pretty directly. All the organizations here are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the Divine Nine — which is standard for HBCU campuses. You've got fraternities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma, alongside sororities including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's the full Divine Nine represented on a pretty small campus, which says something about how seriously this community takes its Greek tradition.

Because Voorhees itself has a smaller student body, the Greek community here is more intimate than what you'd see at a large state school. Chapters tend to be smaller in membership, but that also means the bonds tend to run deeper. On an HBCU campus like this one, Greek organizations aren't just social clubs — they're tied to legacy, service, and a sense of purpose that goes back generations. Probates and step shows are a real part of campus culture and draw attention when they happen.

Don't expect a Greek Row with chapter houses lining a street. That's not really the model at smaller HBCUs. Chapters operate more through campus programming, yard events, and community service than through housing. Intake processes at NPHC organizations are also different from the open rush you'd see at IFC or Panhellenic chapters — they're more selective, often require a minimum GPA and a certain number of completed credit hours, and the process itself is more structured and less publicly advertised.

Philanthropy and community engagement are a consistent thread across all the Divine Nine orgs here. Each organization has its national programs and causes they support, and those tend to show up at the chapter level too. For a campus this size, Greek life carries a lot of cultural weight and shows up in ways that are pretty visible day-to-day.
