Christopher Newport University - CNU Overview

  About Greek Life at CNU

Christopher Newport University is a small public liberal arts school in Newport News, Virginia, and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus feel. There are chapters under both the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Panhellenic Council, plus representation from the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), giving the community a range of organizations across different traditions. On the IFC side you'll find chapters like Sigma Phi Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Gamma Delta, and others. Panhellenic includes groups like Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, and Phi Mu, among others. NPHC is represented by historically Black fraternities and sororities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta.

CNU is a smaller school — enrollment sits in the mid-thousands — so the Greek community is proportionally sized. It's not the kind of place where Greek life dominates every corner of campus, but it's definitely a visible and active part of student social life. Philanthropy and community service tend to be a consistent thread across chapters here, which fits with CNU's broader emphasis on civic engagement and leadership development.

Recruitment at a school this size is generally a more personal process than what you'd see at a large state school. Panhellenic formal recruitment follows a structured round system, while IFC recruitment tends to be a bit more informal and spread out across the semester. Because the chapters are smaller, the process can feel more relationship-based than the massive open-house style rush you'd find at a flagship university.

One thing worth knowing about CNU is that the campus doesn't have traditional Greek Row housing. Chapters don't have their own houses in the way many larger schools do, so social events and chapter life are spread across other campus spaces. That tends to make Greek organizations feel a bit more integrated into general campus life rather than operating as a separate social world.
