California University of Pennsylvania - CALU Overview

  About Greek Life at CALU

Cal U of PA — now part of PennWest University after merging with Clarion and Edinboro — is a mid-size regional school in California, Pennsylvania, about an hour south of Pittsburgh. The campus has a working-class, down-to-earth feel, and the Greek system here reflects that. It's not a giant Greek Row type of school, but there's a solid presence of organizations across multiple councils.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC chapters like Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), Tau Kappa Epsilon, Delta Chi, Theta Xi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Acacia, and Alpha Kappa Lambda, among others. The sorority side includes Panhellenic chapters like Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Zeta, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Kappa. NPHC is also represented here with historically Black fraternities and sororities including Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Zeta Phi Beta — so Divine Nine culture is part of the mix on campus.

Rush and recruitment at a school like this tends to be pretty low-key compared to bigger state universities. It's not the massive, highly produced recruitment week you'd see at a Penn State or Pitt. Chapters are smaller and more community-oriented, which means you're more likely to actually get to know the members before you commit.

Greek life is one part of the social scene here, but it's not the whole thing. The school doesn't have a traditional Greek Row with chapter houses lining a street — most chapter activity happens through on-campus spaces and local venues. Philanthropy events and campus involvement are how most chapters stay visible, and that's pretty typical for schools of this size in the Pennsylvania State System.

The NPHC and Panhellenic communities each have their own events and traditions that show up throughout the academic year, from step shows to formal recruitment events, and those tend to draw attention from the broader student body too.
