Southwestern University - SU Overview

  About Greek Life at SU

Southwestern University is a small liberal arts school in Georgetown, Texas, and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus scale. There are a handful of IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities operating here, keeping things tight-knit rather than sprawling. The organizations active on campus include Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, and Pi Kappa Alpha on the fraternity side, with Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, and Delta Delta Delta representing Panhellenic.

Because SU is a smaller private school, Greek life doesn't dominate campus the way it might at a large state university. That said, it's still a meaningful part of social life for a solid chunk of the student body. Chapters tend to be close-knit, and members usually know each other well across organizations. It's the kind of system where Greek life is genuinely social rather than purely status-driven.

Rush and recruitment at a school this size tend to feel pretty personal. You're not going through massive cattle-call events with hundreds of people — it's more conversational and lower-pressure than what you'd see at a Big 12 flagship. Both formal and informal recruitment processes exist depending on the council, and the smaller chapter sizes mean you get a real sense of the people involved pretty quickly.

One thing to know about SU specifically: the university has historically had an on-and-off relationship with chapter housing, and most organizations don't have the kind of standalone houses or Greek Row you'd see at larger schools. Social events tend to happen through rented venues or campus spaces rather than house parties in the traditional sense.

Philanthropy is a genuine part of the culture here, partly because a liberal arts environment tends to push community engagement, and partly because chapters at smaller schools often build their identity around service events as much as social ones. Each organization runs its own fundraisers and awareness events throughout the year, and there's generally good turnout across the campus community for those.
