University of South Carolina, Upstate - USCU Overview

  About Greek Life at USCU

USC Upstate is a regional campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with a student body that's considerably smaller than the flagship in Columbia. That smaller scale shapes everything about the Greek system here — it's an intimate community, not a massive machine with Greek Row housing and thousands of members.

The chapters on campus represent two main councils. The IFC and Panhellenic side includes Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, and Zeta Tau Alpha, among others. The NPHC side is well-represented too, with all four historically Black fraternities — Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma — plus NPHC sororities Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. Having a full NPHC lineup at a campus this size is actually notable.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row. Chapter housing isn't really part of the USCU experience the way it is at bigger SEC schools. Most chapters operate through campus programming, community events, and off-campus gatherings rather than out of chapter houses. Recruitment and intake processes happen, but they tend to be lower-key compared to what you'd see at a large state school.

Greek life here is more of a niche involvement than a defining feature of the overall social scene. That said, chapters do stay active with philanthropy efforts and campus events, and the NPHC organizations in particular tend to have a visible presence through step shows and community service work. For students who do go Greek at USCU, membership is often a pretty close-knit experience just by virtue of the chapter sizes.
