Ithaca College - IC Overview

  About Greek Life at IC

Ithaca College is a mid-size private school in upstate New York, known more for its strong programs in communications, music, and health sciences than for a sprawling Greek system. The fraternity presence on campus is on the smaller side, with a handful of IFC-affiliated chapters making up the core of organized Greek life. There's no active Panhellenic council at the moment, so the scene skews heavily toward fraternities right now.

The chapters you'll find here include Alpha Epsilon Pi, Phi Iota Alpha, Phi Kappa Sigma, Kappa Sigma, and Delta Kappa Epsilon. That's a pretty tight lineup, which means the community is more close-knit than what you'd find at a large state school. Phi Iota Alpha is one of the oldest Latino fraternities in the country, so its presence gives the council a bit more cultural range than a purely social IFC setup would.

IC doesn't have a traditional Greek Row, and chapters don't typically have dedicated houses the way you'd see at a Big Ten school. Social events tend to happen off-campus or in other venues around the Ithaca area. The city itself has a lot going on — it's a college town shared with Cornell next door — so there's no shortage of off-campus space for chapter events and gatherings.

Rush and recruitment here are pretty low-key compared to bigger schools. You're not dealing with massive structured recruitment weeks with hundreds of people. It's more informal, which some people actually prefer. Philanthropy and service are part of the chapter culture, as they are at most IFC schools, though the scale of those events reflects the size of the system.

Greek life at IC is genuinely one piece of the social scene rather than the dominant force on campus. A lot of students get involved in other organizations, arts groups, club sports, or the many media outlets the school is known for. For students who do join, the smaller size of the system means you get to know people across chapters pretty quickly.
