University of Alabama Birmingham - UAB Overview

  About Greek Life at UAB

UAB is a research-focused urban university sitting right in the middle of Birmingham, and its Greek system reflects that commuter-heavy, professionally driven campus culture. This isn't a traditional residential campus where Greek Row dominates the social calendar, but there's still a real Greek presence here with chapters spanning multiple councils.

The system includes IFC and Panhellenic councils covering the more traditional fraternities and sororities, alongside a strong NPHC presence with several historically Black fraternities and sororities represented. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council presence, with chapters like Beta Chi Theta, Delta Epsilon Psi, Delta Phi Omega, and Sigma Sigma Rho rounding out the community. That breadth means the Greek experience at UAB is more spread out across different communities than concentrated in one dominant social scene.

Because UAB draws a lot of commuter students, pre-med students, and people working while they're in school, Greek life functions a bit differently than it would at a flagship campus. Chapters tend to be smaller and more close-knit, and membership often means something more personal than just a social outlet. Philanthropy and community service are a consistent thread across chapters, which fits the school's broader identity as an institution deeply tied to Birmingham and UAB Medicine.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row with rows of houses — most chapters operate without dedicated housing, which is pretty common for urban schools like this. Events and socials happen, but they're organized around a student body that has a lot going on outside of campus life. Recruitment tends to be more low-key compared to large SEC schools, with formal recruitment processes available but without the massive week-long production you'd see elsewhere in Alabama.

The NPHC chapters in particular carry a strong legacy here, and their step shows and intake processes generate real interest on campus. Organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Omega Psi Phi all have active presences and are visible parts of campus culture throughout the year.
