Purdue University West Lafayette - PU Overview

  About Greek Life at PU

Purdue is a massive Big Ten engineering and research school in West Lafayette, Indiana, and the Greek system here is a genuine fixture of campus social life. With dozens of active fraternities and a strong sorority presence, this is one of the larger Greek communities in the Midwest — and it shows on campus, especially during the first weeks of fall semester.

The system is organized across multiple governing councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees the majority of the fraternities, while the Panhellenic Council governs the NPC sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities, and there's also a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) presence, giving the overall community more breadth than you'd find at a lot of comparable schools. Organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Psi Phi, and others have established chapters here.

Housing is a real part of what defines the Greek experience at Purdue. Many of the larger IFC and Panhellenic chapters have chapter houses, and Greek Row on State Street is a recognizable part of the campus geography. Living in the house is a big deal for a lot of members, especially for chapters with strong housing cultures.

Formal recruitment for IFC chapters typically happens in the fall, with Panhellenic running a structured formal recruitment process as well. The engineering and STEM culture at Purdue does shape who ends up going Greek — a lot of members are in technical majors, and plenty of chapters lean into that with study resources, alumni networks in engineering and tech fields, and professional development programming.

Philanthropy and service are woven into how chapters operate here. Greek Week is one of the bigger annual traditions, bringing IFC and Panhellenic chapters together for competitions and community events. Individual chapters also run their own philanthropy events throughout the year tied to their national organizations' causes. The active discussion and rating activity on this site reflects how engaged the Purdue Greek community is — members here are pretty vocal about their experiences, which tracks with how central Greek life is to the broader social fabric of campus.
